The 2023 National Civics Bee is an initiative aimed at encouraging more young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities

Organized in partnership with the Civic Trust of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the competition in Washington County will inspire middle schoolers to become better informed about American democracy, to engage respectfully and constructively in the community, and to build greater trust in others and institutions. Middle school students from public, private, charter, and home schools are invited to take part in the first-round civics essay competition.

Sterling Financial Management’s second annual “Vote for your Favorite Nonprofit Contest” received more than 350 votes for 34 different nonprofit organizations located in Hagerstown, Frederick, Waynesboro or Chambersburg.

The contest ran for one week, starting on Giving Tuesday, November 29, and ending on Tuesday, December 6. Clients of Sterling Financial Management as well as members of the community could vote for their favorite nonprofit using a link found on their website. Sterling Financial Management selected the winner based on which nonprofit had the most votes to receive a $500 donation.

Transformative Improvements Support Expansion of Howard Street Tunnel, Growth of Manufacturing and Operations Centers

Governor Larry Hogan today announced $100 million in state funding through the Maryland’s Final FY 2023-2028 Consolidated Transportation Program to advance the I-81 Phase 2 project in Washington County into construction. The I-81 Phase 2 project has long been a top priority for Western Maryland and will support economic and job growth, improve safety, ease congestion, and reinforce supply chain reliability for Maryland and the entire region.

The state will be giving away $20M over the first year in loan and grant assistance for either capital infrastructure projects or business development projects in this first round, and $10M/year for the three years following (2024-26).

The Tri-County Council for Western Maryland announced today that applications are now open for the Senator George C. Edwards Fund for Western Maryland. The fund, overseen by the 11-member Western Maryland Economic Future Investment Board and administered by the Tri-County Council, will provide loan and grant assistance to Washington, Allegany, and Garrett counties for economic development projects. $50 million has been allocated over four years, with $20 million available in FY 2023 and $10 million each in FY 2024, 2025

Barbara Ingram School for the Arts High School senior Kirsten Herd received this year’s Bill Dorsey Scholarship for the Barbara Ingram School (BISFA), a component fund of the Community Foundation of Washington County MD.

After winning a People's Choice Award in 2008, Reverend Janice Dorsey named the endowment established in her honor after her husband, creating the Bill Dorsey Scholarship. This scholarship provided a $570 grant to Herd to help offset the cost of materials, supplies and other items directly related to her arts discipline.

Employees of F&M Trust held a winter coat drive in November during which money was collected to purchase 80 coats for students at Thaddeus Stevens Elementary School. A group of employees delivered the coats in early December to Principal Brent Pistner and Guidance Counselor Carrie Strayer, who said the coats would be distributed to children who arrived at school without one.

Dr. Kris McGee, an associate professor at Frostburg State University’s Hagerstown Campus and the coordinator of the Master of Arts in Teaching – Elementary Program (MAT-E), hosted author John Schu on Wednesday, November 30th, 2022, at The University System of Maryland at Hagerstown’s (USMH) campus.

Mr. Schu’s presentation, titled “From the Heart to The Classroom – John Schu’s Best-Loved Books of 2022,” included a 50-book collection of children’s books hand-picked by him from 2021-2022 publications. He shared each book with great passion and enthusiasm. All participants could easily incorporate any of these books into their classroom to promote and increase reading motivation, stamina, and growth. Everyone left the presentation with multiple books, signed by Mr. Schu. His presentation inspired all in attendance.

The University System of Maryland at Hagerstown (USMH) held its annual Elizabethtowne Feaste and Frolic gala on Friday, December 2.

The event was held at USMH’s Hospitality Center on West Washington Street which houses the University of Maryland at Eastern Shore’s Hospitality & Tourism Management bachelor’s program. The event raised more than $43,000 for scholarships through donations from local businesses, foundations, and community members. The Feaste and Frolic is just one of the many fundraising events USMH holds each year benefitting students to ease the financial burden of higher education.
