Meeting Workforce Demand: New FSU Tech Degree Program Launches at USMH
HAGERSTOWN, MD — The University System of Maryland at Hagerstown (USMH) is pleased to announce a new undergraduate program in Applied Computer Science, offered by Frostburg State University (FSU), beginning in Fall 2026.
The Bachelor of Science in Applied Computer Science will provide students in the region with access to high-quality, career-focused education right in their own community. With a focus on areas such as AI, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Software Development, and more, the program is designed to meet the growing demand for skilled technology professionals.
Backed by FSU’s established Computer Science and Information Technologies (CSIT) department, the program emphasizes real-world application and problem-solving. Students will gain practical experience that connects classroom learning directly to the workplace, preparing them for careers in today’s most in-demand fields.
“We are very excited to launch Frostburg State University’s new Applied Computer Science program,” said Dr. Michael B. Flinn, Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Information Technologies at FSU. “Shaped by input from employers and alumni, the program focuses on high-demand areas such as AI, data science, software development, and more, while preparing students to be well-rounded graduates ready for today’s workforce.”
Through the support of a generous grant from TEDCO, USMH has developed a new state-of-the-art lab and classroom space equipped with the latest technology. These modern learning environments are designed to foster collaboration, innovation, and hands-on learning. Additionally, the space offers the opportunity for eSports for Applied Computer Science students, tapping into the culture of opportunities FSU is known for, including Programming Competitions, Capture the Flag, eSports, Student showcases, just to name a few.
“This program is an exciting addition to USMH and a direct response to workforce needs in our region,” said Dr. Jacob Ashby., USMH Executive Director. “Students can stay local, complete a high-quality degree, and step into meaningful technology careers without leaving the area.”
The program is designed for students who have completed an associate degree and are ready to seamlessly transfer from regional community colleges, including Hagerstown Community College and Frederick Community College. With small class sizes and personalized faculty support, students will benefit from an accessible and supportive learning environment. Students will apply through FSU’s Admissions and, upon enrollment, will complete their coursework at the USMH campus in downtown Hagerstown.
Students entering the Applied Computer Science program may also be eligible for a special one-time $1,500 scholarship through USMH’s general scholarship application. This award is offered in addition to other USMH and FSU scholarships, helping make a high-quality bachelor’s degree even more affordable.
Graduates of the program will be prepared for careers such as software developer, cybersecurity analyst, data analyst, systems administrator, web developer, and IT project manager, among others. Students will also have the opportunity to customize their degree by selecting a minor aligned with their interests and career goals.
Available options include Data Science and Cybersecurity. Notably, this Applied Computer Science degree will be offered exclusively at the USMH campus, making it a unique opportunity for students in the region.
USMH will host its Spring Open House on Thursday, April 9, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at its main campus, 32 W. Washington Street in downtown Hagerstown. Prospective students are encouraged to attend to learn more about this new program and other offerings.
