Mental Health among Seniors Continues to Worsen. Home Helpers Home Care® New Campaign to Help Raise Awareness.

In 2022, even as the pandemic declined, 22% of Seniors reported Increased feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Martinsburg, WV – Home Helpers Home Care® of Martinsburg/Winchester/Hagerstown/Frederick, launched a new C.A.R.E. Campaign to help raise awareness surrounding older adult mental health. C.A.R.E. articulates the key signs that an older adult may suffer loneliness or depression due to isolation. You can use the letters to ask if it might be time for a helping hand.

C.A.R.E. Stands for:

CUES – Are there noticeable changes to appearance, hygiene, or housekeeping?

ASSISTANCE – Is there a need for support for mobility or daily activities of living?

RESPONSIVENESS – Are changes in cognitive functioning happening? Repeating themselves, forgetting, or frustrated when communicating?

ENGAGEMENT – Are their social interactions limited? How much time are they alone?

“Estimates from The National Coalition on Mental Health and Aging show that unless we act, the prevalence of mental health disorders among older adults remains unchanged. By 2030 the number of older adults with mental health or substance abuse problems could reach 14 million people,” shared Lisa Fausey, Owner of Home Helpers Home Care of WV, MD & VA. “We hope that by shedding light on the four most significant aspects of seniors remaining happy, healthy, and independent are reviewed by loved ones several times per year to ensure they have all the support they need.”

“I started this business to help ensure in-home care could be an affordable and sustainable support for seniors as they age wherever they call home,” continued Lisa.  “In fact, a study conducted by the Pan Foundation found that three of four seniors said talking regularly to a friend or companion would help them feel more socially connected. Our Caregivers, not only provide assistance with housekeeping, meal preparation, errands, and hygiene care, they also forge long-term relationships with their clients, becoming an extension of the family when they cannot be there.”
