The Learning Lunch Hour

The Learning Lunch Hour

Tuesday, January 10, 2023 (11:30 AM - 1:00 PM) (EST)

Description

TOPIC: Homelessness in our Community

With Jeannie Asbury, Executive Director of Reach of Washington County

Did you know…? The “face” and causes of homelessness may look different than you think. Jeannie Asbury will share about current challenges of homelessness and current resources available in our community.

  • Did you know affordable housing does not equal low-income housing? It means the cost of housing in relation to wages earned. Can someone working in Washington County afford to rent in Washington County?
  • Did you know there is a community initiative called, Change the Way You Give? What to do and how to help if you see a homeless person on the street, panhandling or sleeping under a tree? When to call Homeless Outreach vs Police?
  • Did you know there are free Financial Literacy classes offered monthly at the library and via zoom? Did you know employers can schedule Financial Literacy classes for their employees?

Hear about all this and more at the January Learning Lunch Hour. Come join us in the F&M Trust Training Room at the Chamber.

*This is a Business Education Partnership Committee initiative.*

Pricing:

Free for Chamber members      |       $10 for non-members

Feel free to bring your own lunch. Not available for purchase at the event. The presentation will begin at noon.

Jeannie's Bio:

Jeannie Asbury, Executive Director of Reach of Washington County. Jeannie holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Management from Frostburg State University. Currently, she has 15 years’ financial experience, 10 years’ grant administration experience, and 9 years’ experience in leadership, marketing, and management. Jeannie ’s journey with Reach started in 2011 as a part-time Finance Administrator.

In 2013, her role increased as she also became the Shelter Administrator, overseeing the Cold Weather Shelter program and Reach’s 1600 volunteers. One of many rewarding parts of working at Reach is interacting with so many local businesses and houses of faith who share their time, treasure, and talents. Jeannie served as Chair of the local Homeless Coalition for three years and is currently serving as the Vice Chair. This opportunity allows her to further connect and collaborate with Reach’s community partners.

Jeannie became the Executive Director in May 2021 and feels very fortunate to have the guidance and mentorship of the two previous Executive Directors. These strong amazing women helped guide and inspire her leadership involvement. She is enjoying the opportunity to mentor future leaders within the organization.

Reach is a nonprofit organization serving the Washington County community for 32 years through our volunteer outreach programs. Our programs range from safety net to independence, which includes a Cold Weather Shelter for homeless adults, and our year-round programs including Case Management, a Day Resource Center, Bridge to Change (cleaning the City of Hagerstown), financial assistance to those facing crises, and Financial Literacy classes.
